Low-end MCU cuts BoM costs, simplifies design
The Renesas RA0E2 group is a low-end microcontroller (MCU) in the RA0 series. It is in stock at authorised distributor DigiKey.
The MCU features an Arm Cortex-M23 core with low power and peripherals, which are optimized for BOM cost reduction and have a simple design for the low-end MCU market. The RA0E2 group supports up to 128 KB code Flash, 16 KB SRAM memory, a wide operating voltage range of 1.6 V to 5.5 V, and a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
BOM cost reduction and simplified design are achieved through optimized functions.
This 32 MHz Arm Cortex-M23 CPU, integrated with cost-efficient peripherals is ideal for budget-conscious applications. Its high operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C simplifies thermal design, reducing the need for additional cooling solutions.
Additionally, including a high-precision (±1.0%) high-speed on-chip oscillator ensures enhanced accuracy.
With a wide operating voltage range of 1.6 V to 5.5 V, the design eliminates the need for level shifters or voltage regulators in 5 V systems, further streamlining the bill of materials (BOM).
Low-power operation enhances energy efficiency and prolongs battery life. The microcontroller operates with an active current of just 88 μA/MHz and a standby current as low as 0.29 μA, making it highly power-efficient.
Its flexible power architecture allows for a quick wake-up from standby mode in just 1.6 microseconds, ensuring a balance between performance and energy savings.
To accelerate the design process, the microcontroller offers ease of use, scalability, and compatibility with other series in the RA family.
Engineers benefit from a shared ecosystem and common development tools across the RA family, simplifying integration and reducing development time.
Additionally, a quick prototyping evaluation board is available at an affordable price, enabling faster testing and deployment of applications.
The FPB-RA0E2 fast prototyping board provides an entry point for evaluation, prototyping, and development with the RA0E2 MCU.
It has an incorporated emulator circuit that can be used without any hardware tools, and comes packaged with a Type-C cable.
This board includes through-holes for pin headers that allow access to all MCU signal pins, allowing easy prototyping with the use of a breadboard. It has an Arduino interface and Pmod interface for easy board expansion.
With one button and two LEDs, simple programs can be executed quickly. An oscillator pad is available
Applications cover consumer electronics including smart pens, cooling and heating vests, personal safety trackers; small appliances including smart toilets, air quality monitors (PM2.5) with Secure Cloud; industrial automation including air purifier sensor modules, IO-Link secondary sensor; and building automation including bathroom odour detectors, body temperature measurement in access control systems.
