Specialising in producing larger optics for custom systems at the leading edge of what is possible, Optical Surfaces is a trusted partner to major projects in areas including astronomy, defence, high power laser research, metrology, space, and the environment.

The company’s ISO 9001-2015 approved manufacturing workshops and test facilities are deep underground in an area excavated from solid chalk. This provides an environment where the temperature is naturally constant, and vibration is extremely low. These are important considerations when producing, mounting, and testing ultra-high precision optical systems.

Dr Aris Kouris of Optical Surfaces, commented: “Developing and manufacturing optical systems is a complex and challenging process. Our optical team are highly experienced in correcting optical aberrations and achieving tight tolerances drawing upon their deep understanding of optics, advanced mathematical models, and proprietary manufacturing techniques”.

He added: “Our pedigree in supplying state-of-the-art mirrors and optical systems for high power laser research is second to none. Producing high performance mirrors, lenses, and optical systems for astronomy and space projects is something that we have also done for many years. A great example of this was the motorised ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) collimator and interferometric alignment system we supplied to the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt DLR) in Berlin, Germany. This was used to set-up the DLR

Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS), a hyperspectral Earth-observation instrument now functioning on-board the International Space Station.”
